Since
1996, the NLPCA has donated in excess of $163,000.00 to local charities.
What
began as a fund-raiser to host the 1998 Canadian Police Curling
Championship, has turned into an annual event. The money raised is
used to aid charities in the province, send the
reigning Provincial Police Curling Champions to the CPCA Championship and build
toward hosting National Championships right here in Newfoundland and
Labrador.
Each
year, the NLPCA hosts a Benefit Hockey game featuring the Police All
Stars (members of the RNC and RCMP) against a high profile team.
Those teams have included the Deer Lake Red Wings, Southern Shore
Breakers, Tim Horton All Stars ( featuring former NHL All Stars),
Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association All Stars (NAHA), and Media
All Stars.
At the beginning of each game, up to $10,000.00
is presented to the chosen charity's for that year. Past charities
have included the Boys and Girls Club, Big Brothers - Big Sisters,
The Candlelighters Association, Sunshine
Dreams For Kids, the Children's Trust Fund, Special Olympics NL, and
The Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada.
The
winners of this games were...the charities,
Special Olympics
Newfoundland and Labrador, The Tourettes Foundation of Canada and
the fans and supporters who attended the game.
Other charities benefit from the 50/50 draw.
